"The People" is a song by French singer Stromae from his debut studio album, Homme+.
First aired in the French version of the television program 'Soir 2', the song is the title track from the album Homme+ (2008) and features a sample from the song "The World Is Mine" by English singer Sade. The song is written by David Guetta, Giorgio Tuinfort and Fabien Barthe, with production by the latter two. The song is a celebration of humanity as a collective, and a cry for unity, and as such, the song has been compared to Arcade Fire's "Neon Bible".
Critical reception
Dylan Stewart of Tiny Mix Tapes said that the song "doesn't sound like anything else on the album, but that's a good thing, because it keeps you locked in to Stromae's unique brand of weird, disjointed rhymes". Jon Dolan of Rolling Stone wrote that the song's "irreverent melody" is accompanied by "gruff" lyrics, and further stated that the song is a "rousing celebration of human beings", and a "counterpoint to everything else on the album".
Music video
The music video was directed by Jessica Lerche. It features a series of scenes with people in the city of Paris, including a woman being harassed by a paparazzi, a man about to be detained by police, and an activist being stoned by passers-by. The video has been described as "a gritty depiction of Paris as a den of iniquity", and "disobedient" in its depiction of a "liberated woman". It was first aired on January 11, 2009 on the French music program 'Soir 2'.
